What to Do When You Lose a Tooth

Losing a permanent, adult tooth can be quite a shocking experience. It is important, however, to keep calm and act fast, as a lost tooth is considered to be a dental emergency. Your main goal upon losing a tooth should be to get yourself to a dental clinic that offers emergency dental services, but you should also make sure to follow these four steps before rushing out the door:

  • Find your missing tooth as quickly as possible. Make sure to handle it by the crown, not by the delicate root.
  • Give the tooth a light rinse if it is dirty, but do not dry it or rub it in any way, as this can damage tissue and lower the chances of successful reattachment.
  • Try to position the tooth gently back into its socket, holding it in place by pressing it lightly with a soft washcloth or piece of gauze. Once it is in place you can even bite down on the cloth to keep your hands free.
  • If the tooth cannot be placed back into its socket, then you can store and transport it in a glass of saline solution (water containing dissolved salt) or milk. If this isn't possible, then you can keep the tooth in your mouth, between your cheek and gums.

Now you need to get to a dentist. Go Dental is a dental clinic in NE Calgary that has extensive experience dealing with dental emergencies. We are open seven days a week and take same-day appointments, allowing you to get looked at as soon as possible.
