Dos and Don’ts during the Course of Your Orthodontic Treatment 

You may be worried about feeling discomfort when you get Invisalign® or conventional braces. This is a normal fear, and you might indeed be uncomfortable initially. Once you learn how to prevent or manage this kind of discomfort, you may feel that it is not as bad as you expected. Here are some dos and don’ts worth practicing when you are undergoing orthodontic treatment:


  • Do What Your Dentist Advises: Be sure to follow any instructions that your dentist offers. Even if you do not understand the reason for specific details, you will likely realize later that such guidance was relevant and helpful. 
  • Don’t Move Your Lips Too Much: Getting braces can feel very strange until you have time to adjust to them. You may be tempted to move your lips around quite a bit, but you should resist this urge. The inside of your lips will need to become accustomed to the rough texture of the braces. Moving your lips too much before this happens can result in irritated tissue. 
  • Do Wear Your Aligners 22 Hours Per Day: Because your Invisalign® aligners may feel uncomfortable, you might want to take them out more often than you should. You need to wear the aligners at least 22 hours daily for them to work properly. Keep them in your mouth for at least that long, no matter how much you want to remove them. 
  • Don’t Run Your Tongue Along Your Braces: In the same way that your braces can be abrasive on your inner lips, they can cause sores on your tongue if you are not careful. Avoid the subconscious habit of running your teeth along the braces. 
  • Do Use Orthodontic Wax: When your dentist gives you wax for your braces, use it. Placing this wax around the brackets and wires could significantly decrease your level of discomfort. 
  • Don’t Eat with Your Aligners in Your Mouth: You should remove your Invisalign® aligners when you eat. Failing to do so could damage the aligners. If you are feeling some initial pain from the braces, eating with them in your mouth will not help.
  • Do Alleviate the Pain: You do not need to suffer from the temporary pain associated with orthodontics. If your teeth hurt after an adjustment, talk to your dentist about an appropriate medication that you can purchase without a prescription. If the soft tissue in your mouth hurts, rinse with salt water a few times daily until the abrasions heal.
