Understanding the Different Types of Braces: Comparing Braces and Invisalign

Gone are the days when braces were bulky, unattractive and only worn by pre-teens. Braces have come a long way and are now more efficient and aesthetic than ever. You can fix crooked teeth in no time with traditional braces or Invisalign® technology.

Braces Vs. Invisalign Aligner – Which Is Right For You?

The goal of braces is pretty straightforward: straighten teeth. Choosing the right type of braces for you can be more difficult. Read on to learn more about the difference between traditional braces and Invisalign and to get a better idea of which option is better suited to your needs.

  • Traditional Braces – Most people are familiar with traditional braces. Wires, brackets, and elastics are affixed to the front of teeth and gradually tightened in order to straighten and align teeth for a beautiful smile. The braces are permanent and cannot be removed by the patient until teeth have reached the desired position. The control of the orthodontist is increased with traditional braces, since they can be adjusted in certain locations and to different degrees. This control can decrease the treatment time. They require some extra care when cleaning and are more noticeable than other options, but they remain one of the most effective teeth straightening options.
  • Invisalign – Invisalign are a relatively new clear braces system that uses clear aligners, similar to a mouth guard, in order to slowly shift the teeth into the desired position. The major advantage of Invisalign is that they are less noticeable in the mouth since they are clear, and that they can be removed during the day for activities like eating or brushing teeth. Every few weeks, patients will switch to a different liner, shifting the teeth at a gradual pace. The dentist will have less control over the adjustment of the teeth so the process may take longer. It may also be elongated if patients do not wear the guards as often as possible. More severe tooth alignment issues, such as rotations, are not suitable for treatment by Invisalign.
